In His Own Words

About Him

*** UPDATE ***
In the interest of full disclosure, I must note that I've already met a brilliant match here, and we're extremely happy. We discussed the matter and I'm going to keep this profile active for now. I am only interested in friendship, to meet new people, since I have met people on here before with which I have become good friends and no more. I would ask that anybody who considers whether to contact me please respect these boundaries.
*** ***

I am a young man who is looking forward to many things:

A bright career in software development. An opportunity to study some more to expand my horizons. A chance to finish that novel and conquer that foreign language. A go at completing the climb up Kilimandjaro, the trek across some long-forgotten jungle, a voyage all around the world.

I know I might not get the chance to do many of these things, and that's okay with me. Life is what it is. I intend to enjoy as much of it as I can. And I also know that life's joys aren't nearly as fulfilling when you do it all alone.

I could go on and on about how loyal and trustworthy and principled I am, but I won't. I am not perfect. I have my ups and downs like everyone else. I try to help others where I can, I try to speak the truth as I see it. I make mistakes, I learn from them and move on.

I like the idea of going out and conquering the world, but in practice I'm very content to be at home and to do the conquering from my couch through the pages of a book, to find joy in the strums of good music, or explore other cultures in the enjoyment of a meal well made. I'm equally comfortable in a cinema, a night club, a theatre or on the beach, and new places will always interest me.

About His Ideal Match

*** Obituary for a Cause Lost ***

I'm looking for something, someone, but it's difficult to describe. I did recognise it once, not too long ago: Piercing greens below a mop of mostly unruly hair that would never fall victim to the demands of his career. I found myself reading Blake and Byron, listening to music I'd never before heard.

I found maturity, kindness and humility. He might even have known that it is far worse to be a bad winner than to be a bad loser. I thought he wouldn't ever demand what he wasn't willing to give, but I never got the chance to find out.

At first I didn't see it, of course. I kept myself reserved, kept myself from becoming too involved or too excited. These matters can turn on so little, and I found myself unwilling to be let down. Only when he disappeared did I realise just how much I had been looking forward to letting this one into my life, whether as a friend or something more.

I'm plagued by the feeling that there was something there, something that I did not quite grasp, yet still sensed in our conversations. A could-have-been feeling that makes my stomach sink just at the memory of it. It's patently ridiculous, of course. It had been barely two weeks; no bond could possibly grow to relevant proportions in that time. Yet here I am, aching at a hint of loss that I don't fully understand.

This could really have been a partner-in-crime with whom to do silly things, with whom to explore the world in an exciting adventure, and in turn just stay home with and enjoy the mundane quietude of everyday life. It was all there, perhaps, waiting in the wings.

So I find myself mourning the vagaries of the wild Englishman, lost now to the winds, who would have been full of surprises, seeming reserved yet with wicked, perfect subtitles. I shall move on because I have no other choice, but I refuse to do so gladly or willingly, and I refuse to forget what could have been.
